My co-workers and I decided to go out for lunch one Friday afternoon. Little did we know that our choice of where to go would haunt us for the next week. Cancun is a small restaurant down at the end of King Street in Hampton before you reach Langley Air Force Base.

We love Mexican food and have gone to Cancun before without a problem. This day, I ordered their vegetarian option that comes with a cheese quesadilla, bean chalupa, and bean burrito. We had a great tasting meal and went home that day ready for the weekend. By 4pm on Saturday, I was feeling queasy and generally sick feeling. Click here to read more »

Nonnas Italian Restaurant – Newport News, VA

We walked into Nonnas and were seated promptly even though they were very busy. They really have a lot of room inside their establishment and it was very clean and welcoming.

This was my third time coming to Nonnas and as always, I was not disappointed. They had Valentine’s day dinner options that seemed very upscale and delicious. One option was portabello mushrooms stuffed with risotto cheese, pesto, and more. Their stromboli’s are enormous. My sister got one and it was at least 3 meals for her. They have huge portions for the prices. Click here to read more »

Bier Garden – Portsmouth, VA

Ah, Bier Garden.  Most German restaurants serve a lot of meat and Bier Garden is no different.  What is different is that they also have vegetarian options and quite a few at that.  My friends and I always look forward to watching movies at the Commodore because we know that we will go across the street to the Bier Garden afterward.  The atmosphere is very pub-like.  Lots of wood and ‘homey’ type decorations.  It’s a family restaurant and you can tell when you go in.  Click here to read more »

My new favorite restaurant is currently Red Robin (Outside Patrick Henry mall in Newport News).  I’ve been there so many times in the past few months, I can’t believe I haven’t posted a review on it yet.  Here’s a review of my latest visit.

I haven’t posted in a while (really busy) but plan on getting back in and adding more reviews (Red Robin, Nonnas, Vintner’s Cellar to name a few).  In the meantime, I wanted to give support to my friend who just started a new vegetable blog.  She isn’t vegetarian but is a great supporter of vegetables.  Her blog will include a lot of good information on vegetables and nutrition in general.  She will also be posting recipes.  Check it out – http://www.veggiewiz.com/

Pa-Ram Jae

Time: Approx 1:00pm

This place is so charming and detail orientated. Right when you walk in, you are greeted by a well decorated, clean and sweet smelling atmosphere. I’ve been here before and would recommend the vegetarian spring rolls. They are super tiny and very crispy. This time I ordered the vegetarian delicious dish called Pa-Ram Jae. Although the staff didn’t speak english very well, they were very friendly and refilled my water as soon as it was half empty. They pay attention to the smallest details. Like the carved carrot flower on my plate to the decoratively twisted paper on my straw. Although it was hard to do because it was so pretty, I eventually took the paper off of the straw. Carrot Tree – Yorktown

The Carrot Tree, looks quaint and cute from the outside. The look on the inside matches the outside charm perfectly. The service was friendly and atmosphere quiet. This would be a great place to take your mom, girlfriend or friend. It’s a bit small so large parties should call ahead.Their website had menus and hours for more information. Osaka Sushi Bar

Osaka Sushi Bar in Stoney Run Shopping Center in Newport News was a nice surprise.  My husband and I went on a week night and they weren’t busy at all.  It was just us and one more couple.  The atmosphere was nice thought not overly Asian themed.  They don’t have an overwhelming selection of vegetarian options but I like how they label their rolls as “c” for cooked, “u” for uncooked, and “v” for veggie.  Be sure to not confuse the U’s for V’s.  The best veggie roll that I’ve tried there is the cucumber avocado roll.  It had roasted sesame seeds around the rice that really added to the flavor.  It was delicious!  The service was quick and friendly and the price was just right ($3.50 for the cucumber/avocado roll).  I will definitely go back.

Gah Bua Kham, Hampton

Date: February 13, 2009
Time: Approx. 7:00pm

I have obviously been on a Thai kick lately with all these Thai reviews :) For Valentine’s, my fiancé and I decided to go out to eat on Friday (so we wouldn’t have to wait so long on Saturday). We chose Gah Bua Kham in Hampton. I never knew about this place until recently after doing a seach for Thai places in Hampton Roads. It’s tucked into a small shopping center at the corner of Executive Drive and Hardy Cash Road (near the Coliseum area).

When we got there, we were surprised to see that there was a wait. It was about 20 mins but felt longer since we waited outside. It’s a small place so we didn’t want to crowd the inside. Because it was so busy, we thought the food must be really good…

Thaijindesu, Newport News

Date: February 15, 2009
Time: Approx 4:15pm

We stopped by Thaijindesu in Port Warwick after an afternoon at the Starving Artist Studio (very cool place to paint your own pottery).  Thaijindesu serves both Thai and Japanese food.

We came in at around 4 which is very early dinner and they weren’t busy at all.  They greeted us and sat us at a nice table.  The atmosphere is modern with an Asian feel.  Click here to read more »
